Everyone wants to get, and give, the benefit of the doubt. But what happens when an employee is continually making mistakes? They could be small ones, or they could be major mistakes that impact your entire business. While you may think firing is the only solution, there are other ways to get your employee back on track and hold them accountable for their mistakes. Before you cut your investment short, here are a few things you can do to improve the situation.
Ask them to determine a solution.
When you put the responsibility of solving the problem on them, it both shows that you trust them and that you believe they should be accountable for their actions. So, ask them what they would do to solve this problem, which forces them to think critically about what’s happening and be honest with you and themselves about what the possible solutions will be.
Coach them more closely.
They may not need hand-holding, but you may want to coach them a little more to make sure they’re on the same page. This will also help you gauge what it is they’re doing wrong and if there are shortcomings in their performance or in the procedures in general.
Introduce the concept of checklists.
For many people who make mistakes, it all comes down to organization. If you give them an option to make and use a checklist. You can create one that takes into account the general procedures and rules of the workplace, or have them work out one that is specific to each task at hand.
Reevaluate your corporate culture.
It may be difficult to consider, but you will also want to look at your corporate culture to make sure there aren’t any obstacles in the way of allowing your team to succeed. It may be possible your workplace is not as conducive to their workstyle, and this could be something that is easily remedied. Take a look at all aspects of your corporate culture to determine if the problem could be within.
