It seems like such a small thing, but it can put you over the top in an interview. Research can be the one thing that makes or breaks you as a candidate. Far too often, job seekers appear at their interviews not knowing anything about the company or the job itself. However, it only takes a little effort and some time to conduct enough research to make your knowledge of the company impressive to the researcher. Here are some ways to get started.
Review the job description to learn what they’re really looking for.
This sounds like a simple step, but many candidates overlook it. Before going to the interview, take some additional time to review the job description. Also, read between the lines. Almost every job posting is about a problem the company has that needs to be solved. Figure out how you can be the answer to the questions they didn’t come right out and ask.
Connect on LinkedIn to learn more about the team.
Taking some time to connect on LinkedIn can also give you insight into the company and the people who work for them. Read the company page. Learn about employees from the department where you would be working and beyond. This can give you important background on the company as well as individual personalities.
Google the company to find relevant community news stories.
This is a great way to take your homework to the next level. If you search the company name and find out they have a strong philanthropic presence in the community, reference that in the interview. Describe how working for a company with community involvement is important to you.
Formulate questions around information about the company.
All of this homework should help you create questions to ask in the interview to demonstrate your interest and learn more information. For example, “I see your company was recognized for their charity involvement last year. I was wondering how individual employees can contribute to your community-involvement programs.”
